, this is, this is is a headline from "the new york times." even if republicans were to agree to mr. obama's core demand that the top marginal income rates return to the clinton-era levels of 36%, 39.6% after december 21st, the article goes on to say, the additional revenue would be only about a quarter of the $1.6 trillion that mr. obama wants to collect over ten years. why should republicans agree do that. if it's not going to generate enough revenue, congressman? >> well, it's a down payment on the deal. we want to make sure that middle class taxes don't go up by $2,000 january 1st. that's something that i feel the president feels, republicans and democrats should agree on. that's what we can realistically get done in the next few weeks. a straight up or down vote on the senate bill. we have a discharge petition to bring it to the floor of the house to renew the middle class tax cuts. this will continue in terms of figuring out how to balance the budget. but in the meantime, let's not take $2,000 away from every middle class family. >> let's assume you guys get the rate that you're look

understand the new president obama, with a different point of view than many of us, hoping that through the dint of his intelligence and personality and different points of view that maybe the russians would be receptive to new approach, which is sort of the anti-bush approach. you can understand why he might think he might succeed at that, and therefore try this out. i am not criticizing him for trying. you could question whether he should recently have come to that conclusion, but nonetheless, he should try that. i hope he is shrewd enough to appreciate that it has failed. it is not likely to succeed because of a variety of reasons. it cannot keep going down a path chasing someone who does not want to have anything to do with you right now without doing some damage to yourself. just to cite one example, the very difficult situation that has been created with the czech republic, with poland, with our missile defense system, which i would argue is now pretty much shredded. >> missile defense is nowhere near where it should be to protect the homeland. >> nuclear modernization may be goin

% at the stroke of midnight on new year's eve, taking $2,000 to $3,000 from an averaged family. the house passed legislation to protect our nation from such a calamity but mr. obama vowed to veto it and the senate killed it. . instead mr. he obama tells us he'll veto any plan that stops taxes going up on all those very wealthy folks making over $200,000, who he says need to pay their fair share. i suppose fairness is in the eyes of the beholder. the top 1% earned 17% of all income but pays 37% of all income taxes. but that's beside the point. the fine point of it is that a lot of these very wealthy folks making over $200,000 aren't very wealthy, and they aren't even folks. they are 1.3 million struggling small businesses filing under subchapter s. our small businesses produce 2/3 of the new jobs in our economy. so this battle is very much for the middle class. the congressional budget office estimates that mr. obama's tax increase on the so-called wealthy will actually throw 200,000 middle and working class families into unemployment. 00,000 -- 200,000 lost jobs. that is the optimistic estimate.
